Bringing Nature to the Forefront at Arup’s Regenerative Workplace

At GreenAir, transforming spaces with greenery is more than a mission — it’s who we are. So, when Arup set out to create what is expected to be the most sustainable office in Aotearoa New Zealand, we were proud to be part of the journey. Located in the Hayman Kronfield Building in Britomart, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, this workplace isn’t just sustainable — it’s regenerative by design.

Arup, the global engineering consultancy behind landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and The Gherkin in London, had a bold goal: meet the Living Building Challenge — the world’s most rigorous sustainability certification. As the biophilic design and plant hire partner, we were tasked with bringing nature indoors in a way that reflected this ambitious vision. Our role was to enrich the space with greenery that supports wellbeing, lifts air quality, and complements cultural and environmental integrity.

Greening with Intent

This project was never about decoration. Every plant, pot, and placement was selected to serve a real purpose — improving air quality, supporting mental wellness, and weaving in the deep cultural narrative that grounds the project.

We worked in close collaboration with Unispace and  Arup, and the wider project team to curate a plant palette that echoed the surrounding ecology and principles of kaitiakitanga. The result was a living design solution that told a story of place, purpose, and partnership.

Local First, Waste Last

Sustainability guided every decision. Over 50% of our materials were locally sourced, and every plant was free from harmful chemicals — a commitment that supports Arup’s goal of net zero by 2030 and aligns with the Living Building Challenge. Installation followed circular economy principles, with minimal waste and a clear focus on durability, low maintenance, and long-term regenerative value.

A Living Benchmark for Tomorrow

The full fitout, including our greenery, was delivered in just 11 weeks — a testament to the shared commitment of everyone involved. The finished space does more than meet certification standards. It redefines what a workplace can be: vibrant, responsive, and deeply connected to people and place.

We’re proud to have played a role in this landmark project. It’s a powerful example of how green design can support business performance, nurture employee wellbeing, and respond to the challenges of our climate — all while telling a local story through nature.

Thanks to our partners, Unispace and Arup for having GreenAir on this project.
